Brown's Walkaway Airily

Brown's Walkaway Airily

Angel, my first Doberman, was purchased when I was 18. I paid for her with my job at $1.00 an hour. Angel was handled by Keith Walker of Marks-Tey Dobermans as well as Will Konneker, shown left.

Angel went Reserve Winners Bitch at the DPCA National in 1962

She was a very special start in my love of the breed.

Breeders:  Eleanor & Jack Brown

Owner: Mary Jane Ladd

Several years after Angel passed, I wrote the following story:

August 23, 1961-April 4, 1974

I fell in love with Ann Lee and Will Konneker’s black dobe Trudi, (Brown’s High Halo), and just had to have one of my own.

Ann Lee contacted Eleanor Brown who had a litter out of Ch. Brown’s Samantha of Dameric, sired by Ch. Brown’s Dion.  Mrs. Brown picked out that lively black puppy bitch.  She for sure would be a showman.

Angel as she was then called, came to live with us from the time she was seven weeks old.  She was paid for by my part-time clerk’s salary from Vandervoots.

Angle’s first show at St. Louis Dog Breeders Sanction Match. She was best opposite from the 3-6 month class. She progressed to the big-time, placing reserve winners bitch at the DPCA Specialty in 1962 at just one year. She finished her championship on Labor Day weekend in Mattoon at age 2. Twice she had gone Best of Breed from the classes.  During her show career Will Konneker and Keith Walker were her handlers. She loved to show. If there was a big class, that was great as she got better the longer she was in the ring.

Angel was a super family dog, protector and salesman for the breed.  She would make sure all company was welcome and extract her share of attention. If her new friends got laxed in petting she would remind them that she was there with a very dignified one lick.

Angel protected me in the car and even went to work with me, in the middle of the night.  When I worked on Apollo Lunar Mission Maps.

Angel decided to be an obedience dog at 5 years.  She completed the requirements for CD in 3 shows. She even ignored the kid hanging into the ring with popcorn in KC.

When she had puppies, she would greet people at the door and lead them to her puppy room.  She was so proud of her babies.

The Walkaway Kids we now have are Angel’s grandchildren, sired by her Ch. Derek of Marks-Tey son, Walkaway’s Ablaze of Marks-Tey.

One of the most touching moments I had with her was a fun match we had at Manchester school just 4 months before she died. I took “Old Angel” in the ring and thou she couldn’t stand with her back legs out, she showed as always did, with her heart and expression.

Angel lived to be 13 and we thank Eleanor Brown for privilege of being owned by an ANGEL
